Documents for a Montana Registration
Existing Ownership Documents
A Certificate of Title, Transferable Registration, Certificate of Origin (COO, MCO, MSO), or an SF-97 with a reassignment form.
Bill of Sale
Your signed bill of sale, whether the vehicle came from a private party or a dealership.
Photo of the VIN
Where to find the VIN plate: on the dashboard for cars and trucks, on the frame for motorcycles and OHVs.
Photo of the Odometer
Only needed for vehicles 2011 or newer. A digital or an analog odometer works the same way.
VIN Inspection
A certified inspector confirms the VIN matches your paperwork and fills in the state form.
VIN Inspector Credentials
The inspector business card or ID card showing their name, ID number and department. A photo of the badge alone is no longer accepted.
SF-97 Reassignment Form
For ex-military and other government surplus vehicles, the federal form that reassigns the vehicle to you.
Import Forms
For imported vehicles, the customs paperwork showing it entered the country properly and meets EPA standards.
