Is South Dakota the right state for your vehicle?

Choose South Dakota if
- You are still paying it off. South Dakota lets you register a financed vehicle, so a loan does not stand in the way. Loans through Synchrony Bank or Yamaha Finance are the exception.
- You already paid sales tax. Send proof and you will not pay it a second time.

- Proof of ownershipTitle or MCO with a bill of sale, a transferable registration, or a bill of sale alone if the vehicle is financed.
- Proof of sales tax paid, if you paid itA dealer-signed form (we send it to you) or an actual DMV receipt. Receipts from private tag agencies are not accepted.
Two things that cost money if you miss them
Sales tax. If you have not paid it, South Dakota charges tax on the purchase price or the NADA value, whichever is higher. Dirt Legal sends you an invoice for it. Nothing is charged automatically.
The 45-day clock. South Dakota adds penalties and interest when a vehicle is not titled in your name within 45 days. The DMV can take about a week to start on a packet after it arrives, so send your documents as soon as you have them.

Local rules still applyRegistration makes your vehicle plated and titled. It does not change the road rules where you live, so check your town and county ordinances before riding on public roads.
You may get pulled overUsually by an officer who has not seen a plated off-road vehicle before. Your Road to Freedom guide lists the statutes behind your registration so you can explain it calmly.

Do I need to live in South Dakota?

Can I register an electric dirt bike?
Not through this service. Dirt bikes must be gas powered. ATVs, UTVs and Roxors are all eligible.
Will I need to renew?
Yes, every year. Our renewal service processes it and mails your new registration to you when it is due, so you never have to call the DMV.
